I just finished a course on FASD and I'm still in that mind set so I am going to give you some info on what I learned.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) refers to the consequences of the fetal exposure to alcohol.
FASD is 100% preventable! There is no reason that it is such a widespread problem. If women did not drink while pregnant this would not be an issue.
FASD has 5 main diagnostic terms. Here are the terms and some info on them.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder- FASD

*FAS with Confirmed Alcohol Exposure*

Confirmed maternal alcohol exposure
Evidence of Facial Anomalies such as
Smooth philtrum
Short palpebral fissures
Thin upper lip
Epicanthal folds etc.
Evidence of Growth retardation
Low birth weight
Decelerating weight overtime
Disproportional low weight to height
Evidence of CNS neurodevelopmental abnormalities
Decreased cranial size
Structural brain abnormalities
Neurologic hard or soft signs
Impaired fine motor skills
Neurosensory hearing loss
Poor gail
Poor hand/eye coordination

*FAS without Confirmed Alcohol Exposure*

No confirmed maternal alcohol exposure
Evidence of Facial Anomalies
Evidence of Growth retardation
Evidence of CNS neurodevelopmental abnormalities

*Partial FAS*

Confirmed maternal alcohol exposure
Evidence of some Facial anomalies
Either
Evidence of Growth retardation
Evidence of CNS neurodevelopmental abnormalities
Evidence of a complex pattern of behaviour or cognitive abnormalities
Learning difficulties
Poor impulse control
Problems in social perception
Deficits in receptive and expressive language
Problems in memory, attention or judgement

History of maternal alcohol exposure
Congential anomalies, including Malformations and Dysplasias
Cardiac
Atrial septal defects
Ventricular septal defects
Aberrant great vessels
Tetralogy of Fallot
Skeletal
Hypoplastic nails
Shortened fifth digits
Radioulnar synostosis
Flexion contractures
Camptodactyly
Clinodactyly
Pectus excavatum and carinatum
Klippel-Feil syndrome
Hemivertebrae
Scoliosis
Renal
Aplastic, dysplastic, hypoplastic kidneys
Horseshoe kidneys
Ureteral duplications
Hydronephrosis
Ocular
Strabismus
Retinal vascular anomalies
Refractive problems secondary to small globes
Auditory
Coductive hearing loss
Neurosensory hearing loss
Other
Virtually every malformation has been in some patient with FAS.

Evidence of CNS neurodevelopmental abnormalities
Evidence of a complex pattern of behaviour or cognitive abnormalities
